The premise for this show seemed good. A lawyer with two ex-wives marries another woman who is much younger than him. The lawyer is played by Bradley Whitford, who played a cop in one of my favorite comedies, the Good Guys,
Of course, that Bradley Whitford was gone and you saw him in a much quieter role in Trophy Wife. Much of the comedy focused on the Trophy Wife, who is played by Malin Akerman, who looks much younger than 35 on this show. She’s supposed to play the spazzy hot looking trophy wife.
One of the many problems that I had was that there were too many characters to keep up with. There were three children. One was adopted from a second marriage. I think. Then there were two other children from the first marriage.
Bradley Whitford’s daughter doesn’t like Malin. In a key scene, Malin tries to relate to her stepdaughter by telling her a story of being at a concert and sneaking in with a bottle of water filled with Vodka. Of course, the daughter would do that when she is in school as well, picking up on the idea.
You don’t know how the son feels about Akerman but when one of the ex-wives and Malin are asked to come in to talk about the 15 year old son’s essay, which was erotic, the assumption is made that the son has sexual feelings for Malin. Malin’s reaction is to tell her friend that the Son is a horndog. Of course, she doesn’t know that she is speaking to the youngest adopted son, who hears this and would name the new dog that he receives from his parents Horndog. The parents buy the son a dog because they accidentally killed a hamster, hoping that the son would forget about the hamster now that he has a dog.
That was pretty much the storyline of the pilot episode of Trophy Wife. One review noted that the title will make you think that it is a show with shallow women. I don’t think the title does that. In fact, I think the first episode does show that the entire cast is shallow and the characters aren’t likable in any way except Malin, who is the hot trophy wife.
I liked Whitford in The Good Guys and I think that kind of personality could have radiated on The Trophy Wife. It would have been a better show. I think with the poor scriptwriting and flat characters, this pilot episode was dull and lifeless with no laughs whatsoever. I would give it two stars.
